The Laughery Valley Growers, Inc. a local multi-farm agriculture cooperative, has been offering CSA shares of fresh, naturally grown produce to local residents since 2006. In 2010, the coop has been invited to sell their CSA boxes to employees at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
About CSA's Community Supported Agriculture is a system of local food production that focuses on sustainable agriculture practiced by farmers and supported by members of a local community. A CSA creates a direct relationship between those who want to eat safe, fresh, nutritious food and those who grow it. Growers agree to provide a weekly share of their harvest to subscribers who support them by paying a fee in advance of the harvest season. CSA subscribers join with growers in assuming the costs, risks and reward of growing the season's crops. Such fees pay for seeds, supplies, labor, water, equipment maintenance, soil-building amendments and other expenses needing payment before harvesting. They also include expenses for the management and packing of weekly produce.
CSA subscribers' purchasing power reflects concern for the environmental protection for soil, water and air quality, for their own health needs and for economic justice for family farms. When food items are shipped hundreds or thousands of miles, they ripe or mature and are often coated with preservatives. Local food is fresh, flavorful and more nutritious because it is harvested only a day or two before local CSA subscribers obtain it.
FarmFreshCSA The multi-farm cooperative packages fresh seasonal produce each week for 20 weeks during the late spring, summer and early fall months. In 2010, subscribers will pick-up their CSA weekly boxes each Wednesday, 3:45-7:00pm at the packing site, Walhill Farm, 857 Six Pine Ranch Road in Batesville. CSA season starts on June 2 and ends on October 13, 2010. To reserve a share, subscribers sign-up between March 1 and May 1, 2010 with a deposit. They select a payment option for the balance. Subscribers may sign-up later in the season if shares are available for a pro-rated fee.
2010 Coop Growers include: John Huffman, Chris & Dawn Merkel, Shelia & Tim Merkel, S. Marie Nett,OSF (Michaela Farm), Sue and Kenny Keyes, Richard Salatin, Ande Schewe, and Michael Swango. New growers include: Tommy Koons, Matt Meyer, Greg Schwering, Lisa & Eric Spencer, Mary Stephens, Tom Volgelsang and Steve Wood.

FarmFreshCSA offers Seasonal Eating Pleasures By joining a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), subscribers are committed to eating in accord with the seasons and supporting local farmers. Items in the weekly box will reflect the cycle of our bio-region's growing patterns. Growers plant a variety of heirloom and hybrid items that are known to be hardy and resistant to diseases. Subscribers may find some vegetables that may be new to them, but are hardy in this climate. A weekly CSA Newsletter is emailed each Tuesday evening to all subscribers to keep them informed about the box contents and to provide helpful nutrition information with a sampling of recipes. A hard copy of the newsletter is available to those without email service. For information about this local food venture, view LVG, INC (CO-OP) page on this website.
